FROM THE PASTOR:

Happy Resurrection, Beloved!

As George Harrison used to sing:

It’s been a long, cold, lonely winter!!!! But now we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord, and the joyful renewal of our lives.

So, here’s a challenge for us: How can we make the most of this holy and wonderful gift?  Let’s Share!

Years ago, the United Nations began a reading program called “Each One Teach One.”  As people learned to read, they in turn taught others.  It has revolutionized literacy around the world.

So let’s have “Each One Reach (at least) One.”  Here’s my proposition:  Think of folks you know that might be a nice addition to our family of faith.  If you’ll just give us their names and addresses, and maybe a little background information, we’ll take it from there.

I’ll send them a note of invitation, explaining that they have been nominated as someone who would be a cherished addition to our congregation.  We can either let them know that you nominated them, or we can be mysterious about it!

So, every once in a while, I’ll ask if you have a list for me.  Please give it lots of thought and prayer!!!

          God Loves You.  Me too!!!!

                                                                         -   Pastor Kevin

EASTER BREAKFAST begins at 8:00 AM on Sunday, April 4, & it’s a treat you won’t want to miss!  We offer a DELICIOUS egg dish; donut holes; cereal; rolls; coffee, tea, & milk, plus the opportunity to celebrate the joy of the Risen Lord at the worship service which follows!  Dick Kloes & L.B. Smith are coordinators, & of course, they’d love to have some helpers to work on set-up, clean-up, & serving.  Tickets are SUCH A DEAL, at $5.00 for adults, $2.50 for children under 12, & “Family” tickets for $12.50 (“family” consists of parent(s) & minor children living in the home.) Proceeds benefit our church youth .  There’s a sign-up sheet on the table at the rear of the sanctuary, so you can let us know how YOU’LL help!  (Set-up’s at 9:00 AM on April 3.  Thanks!)

The 21st ANNUAL GREAT PANCAKE BREAKFAST is scheduled for Sat., April 10, from 7:30 - 11:00 AM!  J T Gall is coordinator, & there’s a sign-up sheet at the rear of the sanctuary so you can let him know how he can count on your assistance!  We’ll be setting up for the breakfast on Fri., April 9 at 6:30 PM.  Please help us get the word out for this important fund-raiser, because the food is marvelous, & the opportunity to socialize with friends, neighbors & our church family is beyond compare!  TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW!  All-U-Can-Eat pancakes, with sausage, juice, lots of toppings, coffee, milk ... the whole magilla, at the incredible price of $5.00 for adults, & just $3.00 for children under age 12!

“BRING FRIENDS TO CHURCH” DAY is Sunday, April 25!  We hope you’ll invite LOTS of friends to come with you to worship that day, so they can experience first-hand just what a vital ministry we have here at GAPC!  Perhaps they’ll be surprised to learn that our services are not just spiritually uplifting, they’re a great deal of FUN, as well!   There are SO many people in this community who could benefit from having a church family; sometimes all they need, is to be asked to visit!  (A $25 gift certificate to Applebee’s will be awarded to the person who brings the MOST friends ... could YOU be the WINNER?)

HELP GAPC WORK at MILLER PARK SPORTSEVRVICE during MILWAUKEE BREWER GAMES!  Many, many folks are needed for this project; the church receives a percentage of profits from “our” food booths!   We must receive training before we can work; training dates are Mon., May 3, 6:00 PM at Miller Park; & Wed., May 19, 6:00 PM at Miller Park.  We’re scheduled to work Thurs. May 27; Wed. June 9; Wed. July 7; Fri., July 9; Fri. Jul, 23; Fri. Aug. 6; Wed. Aug. 11; Fri. Aug. 20; Wed. Aug. 25; Fri. Aug. 27; & Sat. Aug. 28.  Game times are published on the sign-up sheets, & volunteers are required to report to Miller Park two hours prior to game time.  Those who have worked Brewer games in the past can vouch for the fact that, though it’s work, it’s also a LOT of fun, as we greet the public & help make their experience at the ball games enjoyable!

      SPECIAL PEOPLE

Prayers for:

Deanna DeTroye-Brown, who underwent knee surgery last month.

Pam Torcivia, undergoing extensive dental work.

Lin Bradley was hospitalized briefly in Mid-March.  We’re praying that she’s soon healthy enough to get on the kidney transplant list.

Megan & Steve Ewert, both with serious back problems.

Joyce Zeeb, dealing with several health difficulties.

Jenny Masch, who spent a week in the hospital in mid-March.

Donna Saugstad, with carpal tunnel in both wrists.

Marv Saugstad, experiencing  a hip problem.

The many folks in the congregation who have been suffering from a NASTY upper respiratory virus.

Joy:

That Judy Dickson is able to be back in worship with us.  Her “new” knee is responding nicely to therapy.

For Victoria Pope, who won first place in a poster contest sponsored by the Fair Housing council.  All 5th grade students in the city of West Allis were invited to participate.  Victoria won a savings bond, as well as other prizes.

For Melissa Gall, whose outstanding performance as “Dorothy” in the Nathan Hale Production of “The Wizard of Oz” won her rave reviews!

(The entire cast was wonderful!)

For Jeri Gamache, who retired as a personal trainer at the “Y”, on March 26.  Jeri’s looking forward to spending lots more time with her grandson; helping husband John with plans for their new house; continuing to lead the “Fit & Faithful” exercise class here at church on Monday nights ... she’ll still be one busy lady!

CONGRATULATIONS, JULIE! What other spring grads can we can acknowledge?  Please let us know, for we don’t want to forget anyone!  We’d love to be able to include information such as future plans (i.e. college, planned major, etc.)  Give Sue a call at the church office, 414-453-3710.

VOTE FOR LEAH’S VIDEO!  Last month we passed on the exciting news that Leah Karrels & 5 of her classmates from Underwood Elementary School in Wauwatosa created a script for the time Warner Calbe “Hang Touch” Video Contest for 2009-2010.  Their script was one of 20 selected as finalists.  Now Leah’s church family has the opportunity to VOTE for the best video ... details follow.

From Friday, April 9th through Monday, April 26th, you can vote for and view Leah's Underwood School Group/Hang Tough public service announcement by tuning to Wisconsin On Demand (WIoD) Digital Channel 4-1-1.  You can watch all 20 videos created by students from around the State and vote for your favorite by watching it again!  The video with the most views will win the WIoD's Viewer's Choice Award.  Leah's video is from Underwood School in Wauwaotsa, called "Take Action!  Be Assertive!".

Leah and all of the girls have been VERY excited about the process of creating the public service announcement, and are anxiously awaiting the awards ceremony on April 29th.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU

TO:

Sue Pope, who is donating the gift certificate to Applebee’s to the person who “Bring(s the most) Friends to Church” on  April 23.

                 and ...

Peace & Justice Committee members, who prepared such delicious soups for the “After Church Café” on Mar. 14.

                  and ...

Those who ATE LUNCH at the After Church Café.  These good folks donated a total of $350 (& change) to support the work of the Peace & Justice Committee!  Outstanding!

                  and ...

Deanna DeTroye-Brown, who’s been filling in for Megan & Steve, in the church nursery.

We’re so glad Deanna’s able to be back in worship with us, following her knee surgery.

                  and ...

Loretta Nalencz, who filled in as choir accompanist on March 14, while Janice was way.

                  and ...

Everyone who helps with our Sunday morning coffee fellowships.

                  and ...

Gail & Dick Kloes, always cheerful office volunteers, [who help keep Sue in line].

SPRING CLEAN-UP DAY at the church is scheduled for Sat., April 17, at 9:00 AM.  Winter has a way of leaving debris on the property ... dead leaves, papers which have blown off garbage trucks, twigs knocked from trees by heavy snow ... so it’s time to undo the damage of winter.  THINK SPRING!  Bring your rakes & other lawn-care equipment, & help Ed Griffith & Resources Committee members as they get a bit of exercise sprucing up the grounds!

MOTHER’S DAY FLORAL ORDER FORMS will be available in the narthex, & in Sunday worship bulletins starting Sun., April 18.  (Mother’s Day is May 9, so you’ll have 3 Sundays to get your order in.  The deadline is for orders is Sun. May 2.)

CALLING  ALL  WOULD-BE  PAINTERS

It seems like it was only a few years ago that we painted the outside of the church, but it was last painted in 1998!  (Doesn’t time fly, when you’re having fun?)  The church is now in GREAT need of scraping & painting.  All the windows were painted a few years ago, before the new storms were mounted, so most of the work will be on a ladder at roof line.  If you can & will help with this project, please sign up with Ed Griffith.  If you have a good aluminum ladder we could borrow, please let us know, for we’ll need a few.

INTERFAITH WEST CENTRAL asks that we publicize the following:

ARE YOU 60 YEARS OLD OR MORE?  NO LONGER ABLE TO DO YOUR OWN YARD CLEAN-UP?  Two church groups in our neighborhood volunteered to do spring yard clean-up.  Would you like some help washing windows outside, raking leaves, trimming bushes, installing a window air conditioner, taking off your storm windows or some other outside chore?  If you do, please call Interfaith West Central at 771-1747 to sign up for our Spring Yard Clean-Up project.  We have openings on Saturday, April 24, 2010, or Saturday, May 15, 2010.

GOT BOOKS?   Jan Wilke wonders if you have books you’re done reading that you could donate to the West Allis Memorial Hospital Volunteers Auxiliary.  The Auxiliary sells used books,  both soft & hard cover, at the hospital shop, but their supply is VERY low, at present.  Specifically, what do they need?  Fiction, in particular, be it science fiction or romance, & just about everything in between!   Biographies & autobiographies, & other quality non-fiction will be gratefully received, as well.   The money raised by this project goes to establish scholarships in the medical field.   Got books that are in good condition?   Please consider donating.  Let Jan know you have books for the project.

We Love Our Custodial Volunteers !

For March, those dusting, vacuuming, mopping & cleaning were Hugh Evans, Peter Zoeller, Ed & Bobbie Griffith, Joanne & Bill Haschker, the Schmelings, & Alan, Terry, Eric & Matt Arenz.  THANK YOU,  THANK YOU!  These volunteers continue to be our “Custodial Angels”, for it’s a vitally important means of keeping our expenses here at the church down!  DO, PLEASE, consider helping the church in this way!

DON’T FORGET   -  We know we announced this in an earlier issue of the Messenger, but you GOLFERS are going to want to SAVE THIS DATE, if you haven’t already done so!   The 6th Annual Roger Saugstad Memorial Golf Outing will take place on Friday, July 30, at the St. John’s/Northwestern Military Academy Golf Course in Delafield, WI.  It’s such a festive occasion, with the opportunity to get some exercise, socialize, & enjoy great food, with door prizes & raffle as part of the fun.

SYNOD SCHOOL

is scheduled for July 25-30, 2010 at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, & what a FANTASTIC line-up of classes they have scheduled!  It’s NOT too early to make plans to attend, for the registration deadline is July 1, & sooner is better, for enrollment in some of the classes is limited!   The Rev. Mr. Bill Humphreys, chaplain at Carroll University, (& a frequent “guest preacher” here, when Pastor Kevin is away) will lead “God & the Box Office”, & share teaching duties with Buena Vista Chaplain Ken Meissner at the “Seminar for Young Adults”.

Other thought-provoking workshops include: “Spirituality 101: Stop, Look & Listen”; “Listening to the Gospels Speak”; “Gilligan’s Island & the Seven Deadly Sins”; “Publisher Pizzaz”; “Praise & Prayer”; “The Bible’s Best Jokes, Pranks & Gags” -- and SOOOO much MORE!  It’s an experience you’ll treasure for a lifetime, for you’ll LEARN -- & WORSHP -- & have FUN -- & share FELLOWSHIP with Presbyterians (& others!) whose congregations are within the boundaries of the Synod of Lakes & Prairies.  We realize that not everyone is able to take time from their busy schedules to attend this event, but please give it some thought. There’s a catalog on the narthex bulletin board, which tells ALL about it, & we’ll be glad to provide additional information, for those who are interested.  (Wouldn’t it be fun to have a whole group from GAPC attend?  Kids can go, too; you can make it a family vacation!)  Scholarships are available to help defray costs.

YOU MIGHT BE A PRESBYTERIAN IF ...

... You’ve ever sung a gender-inclusive hymn.

...The only church camp song you know by heart is “Kum ba Yah”.

... You’ve never heard a sermon on hell, & don’t feel you’re missing out on anything.

...There’s at least one person in every church meeting who says, “But we’ve never done it that way

    before.”

... You have to fight through a crowd of people visiting in the narthex to get into the sanctuary.
