TALK IT UP! TAKE A FLYER TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW, & help us publicize this SPECTACULAR EVENT! (We’ll be cleaning berries on Sat. the 21st at 8:30 AM. Help is needed there, too!)

FROM PASTOR KEVIN

PEACE, LOVED ONES …

So, the summer is upon us - a time for fun and frivolity and a time for rest and relaxation -- and also a time for wrestling with enormous challenges!

It’s our: “What the Church Needs Now” Summer! Here’s how we set the scene: Just when the world needs the church more than ever, we find that churches are struggling all across the land.

Why is that? Why are churches falling down when more and more people need the peace, love and spirit that the gospel of Jesus can bring? What are the obstacles? And most importantly - what can we do to meet their needs?

That’s our field of exploration for the summer. What can we do to help the church be more helpful to people? How can we make the church more effective and efficient?

How can we have faithful fun at the same time? These are some pretty important questions.

I would like to see us engage in a conversation around what the church needs, by talking about what we need from the church.

I’d like us, each and all, to ask our hearts and souls - what would really help strengthen my spiritual life - and my whole life in general?

Then, as the summer goes by, I hope we can build on our great foundation - and come up with ideas and concepts that will help us - but also help the church out there.

One little church doing well is swell, but if we want to make a dent in the pain out there, we’re going to have to share what we learn, what we think, what we believe.

So - let’s dream together. In the meantime, let’s really enjoy our summer together. Let’s revel and rejoice in the season.

Think about what your heart and soul are asking for. Think about what your loved ones need as well.

I’m excited - and looking forward to summer. God loves you. Me too! Pastor Kev

WORK ON THE SANCTUARY FLOORING will begin on MONDAY, JUNE 23. If you’re planning on attending Strawberry Fest on the 22nd, PLEASE consider staying after church to help move things out of the sanctuary, narthex & coatroom so the asbestos removal can begin. (The church will be CLOSED during the week of June 23.)

Approximately one week later, we will begin LAYING THE NEW FLOORING. We’ll need LOTS of volunteers to help with this VERY BIG JOB. (The area is about 3000 square feet!)

Please contact Ed Griffith or Kerstin Lefevre if you can help! Thank you, in advance. (It’s going to be absolutely beautiful, when we’re done!)

THE ANNUAL SWIMMING POOL PARTY & BBQ at the home of Sue & Larry Smith, will be held on Sunday, July 13, beginning at 1:30 PM. Bring your swim suit, towel, a lawn chair, TV tray, a dish to pass for the “pot luck”, & your own meat & rolls for grilling. We’ll fire the barbeque up about 4:30; cooking will begin at 5:00 PM. It’s always lots of fun, & it’s “Rain or Shine”. (We’ll eat indoors if any “liquid sunshine” shows up!) Beverages & condiments are provided. Do let Smiths know if you’re going to be there; it helps them to have some idea how much soda they’ll need! See you there!

A SPECIAL INVITATION…

Stu & Ruth Lefevre will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on June 29, 2008, with an Open House at their home from 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM. All in the church family are cordially invited to stop in for a small snack & fellowship (but NO gifts, please. Your visit is the only present they desire.)

Thank You,

Bobbie Griffith!

Most of our folks are aware that Bobbie makes charming & clever rubber stamped greeting cards, which she sells to benefit the church in a variety of ways. Recently, Bobbie donated $320 from sale of her cards to the fund to purchase HAND CHIMES for our Music Ministry! The chimes (2 octaves, 25 notes) will cost approximately $1,000. They will be used as part of the bell choir, but also can easily be used by our children. Want to help? If so, simply put your donation in an envelope, marked “CHIMES”, or write “CHIMES” on your check, & place in the offering plate. This is going to add so much to worship! Thanks to Bobbie & all others who provide support!

A Note: “Hello to All! Miss you & look forward to seeing you all in August (Sunday the 24th) when we’re in WI to see Erick & to attend a belated reception for our neice & her groom, who were married in the Bahamas in late Feb., & who live in Houston, TX. Love & Hugs. Peace be with you.” Ed & Pam Leintz

THANKS A BUNCH TO:

Pat Sczypiorski, who brought in more than half a case of letter-sized copy paper that the company he works for was throwing away. It wouldn’t work with their office equipment, as it was too lightweight. Our digital duplicator accepts lightweight paper … & our last 3 newsletters have been printed on it, with more to come! Thanks, Pat! Donations of this kind help us keep our costs down … & THAT’S GOOD STEWARDSHIP!

and ...

Terry Arenz, who prepared all the food for our Mayfest dinner & coordinated the entire talent show. And to everyone who helped with set-up & clean-up; & to the talented folks who shared their special gifts with us … GREAT JOB!

and ...

The Praise Band & Singers, who added their special brand of energy to our worship on May 4.

and ...

Libbie Jansen, who sang for us in worship on May 18, & also showed the Adult Class a DVD of Peter’s “Graduation” ceremony from basic training in the U.S. Marines.

and ...

Chad James, who made a special appearance at our Mayfest gathering. The next day, Chad wrote: “I had a great time (at Mayfest), & everyone really went out of their way to make me feel welcome. You have a great bunch of loving as well as talented people in your congregation. I pray all of God’s blessings to you all.”

and ...

Larry Jansen’s friend Mark, who sang at Mayfest.

and ...

Jeri Gamache, who led the Adult Discussion class in exercises on May 4.

and ...

Gail & Dick Kloes, our capable & cheerful office volunteers whose help is invaluable.

COOKIES for HABITAT … Once again, we’ve been asked to provide cookies for the workers at Habitat for Humanity during Blitz week, the week of June 22. Our congregation is always so generous, & the workers are VERY appreciative! We need 700 cookies, (don’t worry, you don’t have to bake the entire 700 yourself. We’re just hoping you’ll want to bring several dozen, to add to the total! Perhaps if you’re making cookies for Strawberry Fest’s Bake Sale, you could include several dozen extra, for Habitat?) Please get them to the church library on SAT., JUNE 21, by 9:00 AM. We’ll need to package them so they can be delivered on June 23, & we have SO much going on here on June 22! (Of course, if you can’t get them here until the 22nd, that’s okay …) The church will be open at 8:30 AM on June 21, so we can clean berries for Strawberry Fest. Thanks so much for your assistance with this ministry!

GREETERS:

June 8 - Gail & Dick Kloes

June 15 - Jean Kern

June 22 - Joyce Zeeb

June 29 - Julie & Bob Williams

July 6 - Elsie Mae & Ken Arenz

4th Annual ROGER SAUGSTAD MEMORIAL GOLF OUTING is scheduled for Friday, July 25, at the St. John’s/Northwestern Military Academy Golf Course in Delafield, (on Hwy C, 2 miles north of I-94). There’ll be a noon lunch, with golf beginning promptly at 1:00 PM. Funds raised are divided between the American Cancer Society and our church Memorial Fund. Dinner is served following golf (at approximately 5:00 PM), with a raffle drawing, following. $60.00 cost includes 18 holes of golf with cart, lunch, snacks, beverages, dinner, T-shirt, & 5 raffle entries. There are only enough golf carts for the first paid 36 golfers. Want to attend the event without golfing? The cost is just $30.00! DOOR PRIZES, DONATIONS, VOLUNTEERS, & SPONSORS ARE BEING SOUGHT. If you can help, please contact JR or Heather Saugstad. It’s one of our most enjoyable events!

FROM OUR CONFIRMANDS … Each member of our Confirmation Class was asked to write a short Statement of Faith. They did such a good job, we’re including excerpts from their writings. Kaitlyn Saugstad says: “I believe that in Jesus Christ anything is possible…I will follow God and listen to him wherever it may lead me.”

From Billy Weber: “I believe in God and Jesus & the Holy Spirit. My sisters and I were baptized in Greenfield Ave. Presbyterian Church, & both of my sisters were confirmed in this church. Now it is my turn to be confirmed.”

Derek Saugstad writes: “I believe in one God the creator of heaven and earth … a God of compassion and grace… When I am down I turn to the Bible to lift my spirits. In the future when I am blessed with a family I would like to teach them the importance of having faith and believing in God. God, Jesus and the Bible will always be in my heart and a big part of my life.”

Special thanks to our custodial volunteers for May. Dusting, vacuuming, mopping & cleaning were: Terry, Alan, Eric & Matt Arenz; Jim, Judy & Jeff Dickson; Lori Johnson; Kay Ulma; Ed & Bobbie Griffith; Terry, Pat, Jason & Brenna Sczypiorski; &

RELAY for LIFE is a community gathering where everyone can participate in the fight against cancer. At 6:00 PM on Friday, July 18, our church teams will gather at Nathan Hale High School, 11601 W. Lincoln Ave. in West Allis, for opening ceremonies of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of West Allis/New Berlin. It’s followed by a “Survivor’s Lap” around the track at 6:30. The Relay concludes at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 19. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event -- because cancer never sleeps. Our church has a VERY committed team. Please contact Laurie Kadunc, (414)257-0196, if you’re interested in joining the team. We’d be VERY pleased if you’d like to SPONSOR one (or more) of our walkers!

Miller Park

We’re still looking for workers to staff Sportservice booths at the ball games this month (& in July …); the more trained folks we have to work an event, the bigger the booth we’re assigned, which means the greater our profits can be! (Training dates are still available, if you’ve not been trained, yet …) See JR or Heather Saugstad to find out what dates you’ll be needed! They’ll be glad to answer any questions you may have.

Vacation Bible School will be here before we know it! It’s August 11 -15, at Forest Park Presbyterian Church, 2300 S. Sunny Slope Rd. in New Berlin, from 9:00 AM to noon. The theme is timely, & important: it’s about the RAINFOREST! As it was last year, it’s a “Fab 4” effort, with volunteer staff & children from GAPC, Forest Park PC, Heritage PC, & Faith PC. There’s a “Kick-Off Party” scheduled at Forest Park on Sunday, August 10, at 11:15 AM. Terry Arenz is part of the team doing the planning, & she tells us that HELPERS ARE URGENTLY NEEDED! Want to be involved? Want more information? Call Terry at 414-321-7354. She can provide all the details!

STRONGHOLD SUMMER CAMPS, a ministry of Blackhawk Presbytery, provides opportunities for campers to experience the Biblical vision for human community through a camping environment. During the summer, Stronghold Summer camps become the place where many friendships & memories are born. It’s a safe, nurturing Christian experience for youth as a caring community in a natural environment. There’s a “Grand Camp”, (for grandparents & grandchildren), which kicks off the season from June 13 -15. Weekly camps then run from June 15 through July 25. There are Adventure Camps, a “First Timers” camp, “Treasures of Life” camps, Music, Art & Drama Camps; and MORE! There’s a flyer (with registration form) on the narthex bulletin board; speak with Christian Education chairperson Laurie Kadunc, for additional information. Melissa Gall has been attending Stronghold camps for some time; she’ll be glad to share experiences with you!

SYNOD SCHOOL 2008 begins on July 27 at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, concluding on August 1. It’s a marvelous opportunity to experience Christian fellowship & receive training as elders, deacons, Sunday School teachers, worship & CE committee members; in short, it’s for everyone in the church community (including kids!) There’s worship, Bible study, music, physical activities, exploration of serious issues … SO much is offered, we simply don’t have room here to list it all. If you’re thinking of attending, DO check out the catalog on the narthex bulletin board. Our own Phyllis Shudy attends the school regularly, so she’ll be glad to share some of her experiences with you.

St. Ben’s Community Meal Program is the charity beneficiary for 620AMWTMJ’s Bill Michaels 5K Run/Walk to German Fest on Thursday, July 24. If you’d like to participate, or wish additional information, please see the flyer on the narthex bulletin board. We’ve supported St. Ben’s through our Peace & Justice Committee’s “Chili Mac” program for many years. St. Ben’s cares for over 100,000 needy individuals annually. (There’s FREE ADMISSION to German Fest included with your registration fee.)
