SPECIAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING FOR ELECTIONS/ Peace & Justice Luncheon The Nominating Committee has been hard at work preparing a slate of new deacons & elders for the “Class of 2010”. (Time really does fly when you’re having fun! It seems like only yesterday we voted on officers for the “Class of 1980”!)
The Congregational Meeting to elect these officers will take place immediately following worship on Sunday, October 28. As soon as the meeting is completed, the Bethlehem Stars will rehearse, & our “Sunday School for All Ages” will begin. At approximately 11:45, we’ll begin our “Peace & Justice Luncheon” with former Milwaukee County District Attorney E. Michael McCann as guest speaker. (There’s a complete article on this event in coming pages.)

Our Nominating Committee., which has been hard at work. and ... All who helped with the Rally Day Pot Luck and ... Kerstin & Dan Lefevre, who hosted the wonderful Family Fun Night on Sept. 15! and ... Gail & Dick Kloes, tireless office volunteers whose help is so greatly valued! CONFIRMATION CLASS begins on Sunday, October 7! It will be held at 10:45 AM during the Youth Class (since it’s appropriate for one & all who attend that class!) It’s fun, it’s exciting, & if there’s someone in your family who is interested in being confirmed please speak with Pastor Kevin! There are plans to visit the Islamic Center, a synagogue, & more. (We’ll invite everyone in the congregation who wishes to come, on these “field trips”.) “Fab 4” event at Heritage PC Come & hear Elizabeth Cook, a Presbyterian missionary in Costa Rica, as she tells of her experiences there. It’s on the afternoon of Sunday, October 7, at Heritage Presbyterian Church in Muskego (College Ave., just east of Sunny Slope Rd.) The gathering begins at 4:00 PM, as we share time with Elizabeth & then have a simple brown bag supper, following. Heritage will provide beverages & dessert, along with paper products. We’ll finish by 6:00 PM. (Yes, we kow that the Packers play “da Bears” that evening; we’ll be done in plenty of time for you to catch the pregame!) To find out more about Elizabeth, google PUSA & link to Mission & Missionaries. (“The Fab 4” are GAPC, Faith, Forest Park, & Heritage Presbyterian Churches.)
Adult Discussion Group We’ll discuss a variety of topics during October. Sue Smith will lead most classes, but on Oct. 14, the Rev. Mr. Bill Dummer will be with us to provide up-to-date information on our presbytery’s planned partnership with a presbytery in Ghana. This past July, Bill returned from his most recent trip there it’s a fascinating concept. Plan to hear him on Oct. 14! There will be NO Adult Bible Study on this date, so that EVERYONE has the opportunity to hear Rev. Dummer.
Nursery Helpers needed. Please sign up on the sheet at the rear of the sanctuary. It’s such an important way to include our “littlest members” in our faith community. Sally Tarvid will be glad to provide details.
FAMILY FUN NIGHT is from 5:00 - 9:00 PM in Jack Reichert Hall here at the church on Sat., Oct. 27. Please bring a pizza (& a snack item, if you wish ) AND since it’s a HALLOWEEN THEME feel free to come in COSTUME! The costume is not essential, of course, but if you’re comfortable wearing one go for it! GREATER MILWAUKEE CROP WALK - SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2007 Join us in fighting hunger and bringing hope and relief to people in need. This year is the 23rd annual Milwaukee area walk and food drive in which hundreds of people of faith communities participate. Last year nearly 1,000 men, women & children walked & collected over $67,000 and more than 8 tons of food! We can help make this year even bigger. The need is VERY great in Milwaukee. Poverty is at record levels. Milwaukee suffers from the fourth-worst childhood poverty rate in the country, & seventh-worst overall poverty rate. Besides money, the food items that are needed are:
Sign up to walk or sponsor a walker! Barb Brunett or Judy Dickson can provide details. Greenfield Avenue Presbyterian Church CAN make a difference! Hunger & poverty MUST NOT BE IGNORED! - Peace & Justice Committee.
PEACE & JUSTICE LUNCHEON Oct. 28 will feature former Milwaukee County District Attorney E. Michael McCann, who will speak on the death penalty &/or Internet Predators. It begins at 11:45 AM; tickets are $5.00 for adults, $2.00 for children. The purpose is to raise awareness & money to support the committee’s many projects, i.e.: Good Samaritan Outreach; St. Ben’s Community Meal Program; the Guest House; Habitat for Humanity; Heifer Project International; Interfaith for the Elderly; Literacy Services of Wisconsin, and Amnesty International. Invite everyone you know to come hear this absorbing & timely commentary.
NOTE: DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME ENDS NOV. 4! Turn your clocks BACK one hour before going to bed on Nov. 3!
There’s been a request to reprint the following, which appeared in our denomination’s “Stewardship in Public Life”, January, 2007 issue. “Citizenship is a trust Citizenship is a trust in the exercise of which we are called on to be faithful stewards. Too often churchmen (& churchwomen) have been silent on political issues when they should have spoken courageously. Too often they have been aloof & indifferent when they should have taken resourceful leadership. The price of liberty under law is a devoted & intelligent people prepared to act with conviction.” (1952 Statement - P.C.(U..S.A.) minutes, p. 105)
A NOTE FROM THE TRANSFORMATION COMMITTEE Another project is behind us, & from the comments I’ve heard, it seems to be a success. The added doors will be especially nice when we happen to have an overflow crowd this Christmas. (I hope so!) The Transformation Committee has already begun discussing the next phase, which is to replace our seating. This will be the most expensive phase of our remodel. (Also, one of the most important.) We currently have about $25,000 available in our building fund. The new seating will require a bit more than that. We’ve kept most of our projects under budget, but we’re struggling to increase the fund so we can continue our projects. We would be most appreciative if you would take a moment to review your pledge to the capital campaign. Such wonderful things are happening! Also, if you haven’t yet had a chance to pledge or give to the campaign, please prayerfully consider a gift of any size. Thanks - Kerstin Lefevre
COFFEE FELLOWSHIP VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Committees will no longer be responsible for organizing our Sunday morning fellowships. Heather & JR Saugstad will be picking up the bread from Panera for us each week; BUT we need volunteers who are willing to purchase the donuts (2 dozen, for the moment); & folks to help with set-up, clean-up, preparing coffee & punch, & setting out the goodies. We’ll have sign-up sheets out soon. We’ll need at least twelve helpers (more would be lovely.) Thanks!
USE YOUR TALENTS TO CLEAN THE CHURCH! Have you noticed how clean & sparkling the church is? It’s all thanks to our volunteers, who so willingly clean bathrooms, scrub floors, vacuum, dust, empty wastebaskets, & perform other tasks. We’re told that if four people are working, it only takes about an hour & a half each week! BUT we need some NEW faces on the teams! It’s VERY cost-effective this way, & we hope to continue to be good stewards in this fashion. There’s a complete list of tasks inside the door of the custodial closet; Ed Griffith can provide details. Please give thought & prayer, & then let us know when you’ll help.
Sweet Potato Soufflé (a big hit at Rally Day Pot Luck)
4 c. hot mashed sweet potatoes ¼ c. butter 2/3 c. brown sugar pinch salt ¼ to 1/3 c. milk or cream 1 - 2 eggs, beaten dash of cinnamon Cook
potatoes until tender & mash well. Topping: ½ to ¾ c. pecan or walnut pieces ½ to 2/3 c. butter, softened ½ c. light brown sugar
Mix thoroughly & sprinkle mixture over top. Bake at 375 for 10-25 minutes, long enough for butter to melt & top to crisp.
NEW DIRECTORY Our most recent church directory was the photo directory printed in 2006. Last month, we announced plans to publish a new (non- photo) directory to include in the mailing of the November newsletter. Pastor Kevin suggests that January, 2008, would be more timely. (We’ll be taking in some new members between now & January, & will want to include them, of course ) So we’ll plan to include your NEW directory with January’s issue of The Messenger!
PEACEMAKING Offering will be accepted on World Communion Day, Sunday, October 7. It’s one way the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) helps support youth programs that work to prevent gang & drug involvement; give shelter & other support services to those who have suffered from domestic violence; create resources on nonviolent living; contribute to local CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) programs to advocate for abused & neglected children; support programs for persons newly released from prison, & help provide a variety of other essential services. There are special pew envelopes for this purpose. Won’t you help?
Want a “pain free” way to help the church? Take part in the Pick ’N Save ADVANTAGE card program, (also known as “We Care”). Show the card at the checkout whenever you make a purchase at Pick ’N Save, & the church will receive a percentage of your entire purchase back from the store. Make sure you give them our number, which is 297275. That insures that we are credited for the purchase.
ADULT FELLOWSHIP CLUB - Date: Sat., Oct. 20 Place: 4671 S. Lake Dr. Time: 5:00 pm We’ll go to a new restaurant to enjoy a genuine Serbian dinner! It’s reasonably priced, & we’re told the food is very good. Make your reservation by October 16 with Adela, 414-476-2325.
YE OLDE TYME CHRISTMASSE FAIRE (described in Pastor Kevin’s letter on page 2) requires a TASK FORCE to help with planning & coordinating this UNIQUE event! We’re presently recruiting members to serve on the task force the first meeting is Monday, October 1, at 7:15 PM. It’s such an exciting concept, we KNOW you’ll want to be involved! We realize this is short notice, but if you can make it on Oct. 1, we’d love to have you. There will be other meetings, of course, which we’ll announce well in advance. Talk with Pastor Kevin if you’d like additional information. This will be an unusually gratifying experience DO plan to help!
