“MINI” OCTOBER, 2009 - THE MESSENGER GREENFIELD AVENUE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 1455 S. 97th St., West Allis, WI 53214 “FRIENDS MOVING FORWARD, FOCUSED ON FAITH” Church Office 414-453-3710
A NOTE FROM YOUR EDITOR
Hello, Church Family! Your last issue of the Messenger covered the months of September & October, so we’re not repeating too much of the information contained in that newsletter. However, we promised you a “Mini-Messenger” for October, to keep you up-to-date on events which took place following the distribution of the two-month issue. So -- this is it. Please refer to your September/October copy for birthdays, anniversaries, scheduled events, etc. We’ll only include NEW information, here. (Well, MOSTLY new ...) Deep peace - Sue Smith
ABOUT WEDNESDAY NIGHTS On Tues, Sept. 29, Session voted to suspend our Wednesday evening worships. They have been a wondrous & meaningful experience, but scheduling conflicts made this a necessary change. Beginning on Wed., Oct. 7, & continuing every Wednesday evening thereafter, the HANDBELLS will practice in the sanctuary at 6 :30 PM. Those interested in being part of this dynamic group of musicians are encouraged to come to practice -- you’ll be welcomed with open arms! (And, of course, we’d be delighted to have new folks in our Chancel Choir, which practices Wednesdays at 7:30 PM!!) Director Jill Lukas is eager to meet you!
WELCOME, JANICE BORKENHAGEN! Have you had a chance to meet our new ACCOMPANIST? She’s been worshipping with us regularly for some time -- & she’s the mother of our choirs director, Jill Lukas. She’s also an accomplished organist, who filled in for Loretta while she was away last month! If you haven’t introduced yourself to her yet, do be sure to welcome Janice to our church family. We’re so glad to have her!
KRINGLE SALE ORDERS are due on Sunday, October 11! See Barb Brunett to pick up an order form, if you’ve not already done so; then let your friends & neighbors know that they can place an order with you for this beloved Wisconsin treat! Orders may be picked up at the church on Saturday, October 17, from 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM. It’s fun, it’s a product people are eager to order, & it’s an easy & painless way to raise funds for our church! Thanks!
Norma Schuele “I am getting along all right here. It is some place to live in my “old age” & also, I need medical care.” She adds that she’s thinking of us all.
Rose Luttrell was hospitalized following a heart attack, but is now at home. She tells us: “Thanks to all of you; you’re simply wonderful. Thank you for your prayers. Love, Rose”
Prayers for:
Stu Lefevre, who was hospitalized twice, but is now on the mend.
Judy Dickson, hospitalized with ulcer problems which are being successfully treated.
Gail Kloes, who was hospitalized briefly but is home & feeling much better.
Ken Arenz, who made a trip to the VA’s emergency room. Test results indicated that he’s okay.
Alan Arenz, who developed a facial infection which led to an episode of Bell’s Palsy. Thankfully, his recovery has been rapid.
Deanna DeTroye-Brown, experiencing painful arthritis flare-ups. She’s found it necessary to give up driving.
George Edward, who recently received a pacemaker.
Dan Lefevre, nursing a back injury.
Josh Kosler, who injured his knee during basic training at Lackland AFB.
Continued prayers for: Lin Bradley, Rose Luttrell, & Norma Schuele.
WE LOVE OUR CUSTODIAL VOLUNTEERS! For September, those dusting, vacuuming, mopping & cleaning were Hugh Evans, Peter Zoeller, Ed & Bobbie Griffith, Phyllis Shudy, Anne Sheridan, Diane Edward & Barb Brunett.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU TO: Gail & Dick Kloes, who donated a brand new refrigerator for the church kitchen! and ... Cris Pope, who donated a coffee maker for the library. (Thanks also to Sue Pope, also, who facilitated this donation.) and ... Those good folks who helped assemble & deliver door hangers in the neighborhood, prior to our Sept. 13 Rally Day. and ... God’s Guild; Amanda Williams & Melissa Gall; & Janice Pendergast & her sister Kimberly Verburgt, who provided VERY special music in September.
FYI (For your information):
Pastor Kevin is currently serving as Moderator for Grace Presbyterian Church in Milwaukee, while that congregation is in the process of seeking an Interim Pastor. Rev. Roger Hawthorne retired recently, after serving the Grace congregation for a period of 17 years.
We received a letter from the General Assembly Mission Council, thanking our congregation for our $1,100.44 contribution to the 2009 One Great Hour of Sharing. Awesome!
The Wisconsin Better Business Bureau, State Central Credit Union & ProShred Security invite us to participate in ShredFest -- their free shredding event, which will be held in West Allis on Sat., Oct. 17, from 8:30 - 11:00 AM. It’s a FREE event, which will take place RAIN OR SHINE at the State Central Credit Union, 10015 W. Greenfield Avenue. You may bring up to 3 boxes of documents for shredding, on the spot -- it’s one of the best ways to protect yourself against IDENTITY THEFT! What should be shredded? Old checks, junk mail, bank & credit card statements, old tax returns & receipts ... & any mail which contains your name &/or address. Don’t just toss it in the garbage can & assume it won’t fall into the wrong hands. Protect yourself! If you don’t need it, DESTROY IT -- RESPONSIBLY!!!

FALL FEST FALL FEST FALL FEST is coming on Sat., Oct. 31, from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM! We’re still seeking lots of QUALITY RUMMAGE items (but no clothes, please...) Because we now have all kinds of space in the church basement, you may bring your rummage items with you to church any Sunday, [or if it’s more convenient to bring them during the week, please check with Administrative Assistant Sue Smith, Pastor Kevin, or Ed Griffith, to be sure there’s someone at the church to let you in.] We also need items for the RAFFLE, & the SILENT AUCTION ... Speak with Sue Pope or Diane Edward to find out how you can help with these efforts.
