RELAY FOR LIFE of West Allis/New Berlin, sponsored by The American Cancer Society, will begin at 6:00 PM on Fri, July 15, at the MILWAUKEE MILE at State Fair Park.  It

concludes at 10:00 AM on July 16.  For a number of years, a GAPC has joined in the event.  Through our participation, we affirm our desire to “battle cancer around the clock” by having at least one person from the congregation on the track for every hour during the event.  It’s not necessary to RUN ... walking (even slowly) is fine!  The Relay opens with a “Survivor’s Lap”; there’s a Luminaria lighting at 10:00 PM on the 15th. It’s an important way to remember those who’ve been lost to the disease; recognize those who have won the fight against  cancer; & encourage those who continue to fight. back against the disease.  We need walkers & folks to sponsor them with donations.  Sponsor forms will be passed out in worship on Sundays until the event.  If you’re interested in walking, or would like to purchase a Luminaria, speak with GAPC Relay coordinator Laurie Kadunc, at church.

ROGER  SAUGSTAD  MEMORIAL  GOLF  OUTING  - It’s the 7th Annual, & it’s all set for Friday, July 29, 2011, at the St. John’s/Northwestern Military Academy Golf Course in Delafield. Golf begins promptly at 1:00 PM, with a “shotgun start”; dinner will be served following the golf at ABOUT 5:30 or 6:00 PM.  For those new to the congregation, here’s a bit of background information.  Roger, a young man who was life-long member of GAPC, loved all sports; golf was one of his favorites.  He passed away in 2004, following a valiant battle against esophageal cancer.  Through participation in the golf outing, we honor Roger’s memory.  50% of the funds raised by the event are earmarked for our church Memorial Fund.  The other 50% are donated to the American Cancer Society.

The $60 cost includes 18 holes of golf with cart, dinner, a T-shirt, snacks, beverages & 5 raffle entries.  (Please note that there are only enough carts for the first 36 paid golfers.)  If you’d like to attend without golfing, the cost is $30, & includes everything BUT the golf.  It’s always great fun to visit with senior Saugstads, & others in the church family who don’t golf, during the course of the afternoon; you might like to bring a lawn chair, for that!   Directions to the golf course are printed on the registration forms, which are available on the table in the church narthex, or from JR.  Please note that DOOR PRIZES, DONATIONS, VOLUNTEERS, & SPONSORS ARE BEING SOUGHT.  If YOU can help, or have any questions, please contact JR or Heather Saugstad.

FROM  OUR  PASTOR: Happy July, Beloved:

Usually, one of my great concerns about “the Church” is that it tries too hard to maintain the past, to hold on to it.  All too often, it seems like we try to make it 1957 all over again.  More than worship Jesus, it seems like some churches just worship “the good ol’ days.”

But just the other day, a story popped into my head, that reminded me of what Ecclesiastes says:  “There is nothing new under the sun.”

In Oconto, in 1957, (long before I pastored there), First Presbyterian Church was a great big, beautiful, impressive, brick and stone church.  Next to it was what was referred to as “the Church Hall”.  It was a plain building, but it was large enough that the High School basketball team was able to play games there.  In the basement of that building was -get this- a bowling alley!

Now, Oconto was ethnically largely a French/German Catholic town, and yet, First Presbyterian was, in many ways, THE community center.

That Hall housed many of the fine arts: concerts, and plays, and of course, sports!  Not everything was Holy, but just about everyone in town visited that Church.

My point is this: we can’t bring back 1957 - but I do believe that one of the answers to revitalizing the churches is for us to become again “the community center.”

What’s exciting is, we don’t have to go to great expense to have the facilities necessary.  We have a great building, and today, bowling alleys, golf courses, libraries etc. can be virtual.  With a modest investment in technology, we could be that place.  Think about it.  Pray on it.  Let me know what you think…  God loves you.  Me too!!!!

-  Pastor Kevin

SPECIAL PEOPLE

Prayers for:

Lin Bradley; the Rev. Roger Hawthorne, now at Southpoint Rehab Center; Diane & George Edward, on the death of Diane’s brother Charles Hegji; Maynard Saugstad, Sr., making a good recovery from knee replacement surgery.

Continued prayers for our shut-ins; & for all who search for jobs.

Joy:

We recognized Stephanie Jervis in worship on Pentecost, with commendation & presentation of a new Bible.  Stephanie was confirmed in another Christian church following completion of a 3-year class, but on joining GAPC, she felt the desire to understand what it means to be Presbyterian by attending OUR confirmation class, (just concluded).  We’re so blessed to have her here!

For Vicky Kuglitsch, who passed final exams with a 3.19 GPA.  Good for you, Vicky!

For Holly Weber, who’s finishing work at the University of Minnesota, in psychology.

For Ryan Smith, who’s been selected to play in his division’s All Star Game in the West Allis Little League, on July 22.

For Marv & Donna Saugstad, who have a new great grandchild.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, TO:

William Pakrul, a member of  Greendale’s American Legion  Post 416, for sharing his experiences on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944 (D-Day), & months which followed, with the Adult Sunday School Class on June 5.  And thanks to Harry Koroghlanian, who arranged for Bill to speak with us.

and ...

The generous folks who baked COOKIES for Habitat for Humanity the week of June 12.

and ...

The SCHMELING FAMILY, who coordinated our wonderful June 19 STRAWBERRY FEST.

Thanks, too, to EVERYONE who worked the Fest, (too numerous to mention by name).  This includes: our bakers, our kitchen helpers, all coordinators, our sound crew, those who ran children’s games, those who cleaned berries, set up prior to, & cleaned up after ... the list goes on & on.

and ...

Anne Sheridan (& her massage chair), for the relaxing & renewing massages Anne “sold” to raise funds at Strawberry Fest.  It was VERY popular!

and ...

Alan, Terry, & Matt Arenz,  Kayla Jervis, & Sue Smith, who made the large Strawberry Fest signs we affixed to the Arenz’trailer & Pastor Kev’s truck, to display on Greenfield Avenue the day of the Fest.   They’re stunning!

and ...

Larry, Elizabeth, & Peter Jansen; Anne Sheridan: Sue Smith; & God’s Guild, for the “Introits” & “Special Music”  they’ve provided since Chancel Choir & Handbells went on “summer hiatus”.

and ...

Gail & Dick Kloes, faithful & hard-working office volunteers, always so willing to help!  (It’s great to have Dick back at work; we’re delighted that his knee replacement surgery went so very well.)

GUESS WHAT??? We still have several spots where you can play your kazoo, sing a song, or perform with a small musical group as you provide SPECIAL MUSIC during the summer Sunday worships.  Choir Director Jill Lukas has prepared a sign-up sheet at the rear of the sanctuary.  DO write your name in the blank for a Sunday when you can share your talent with us!  Special music greatly enhances our summer worships!

As we go to press, STRAWBERRY FEST has raised $1,488.50! What a fantastic effort our folks made, ensuring the success of this event!

and ...

Miller Park workers raised $390.00 at the May 24th game; $710.00 at the May 27th game, & $550.00 for the church at the June 10 game.  This is awesome!

FALL  FEST  RUMMAGE:  IMPORTANT  NOTICE!

Due to MapleGrove Treatment Center’s summer program at the church, we can’t accept rummage for FALL FEST at the church until AFTER LABOR DAY.    Then, we’ll CHEERFULLY accept your donations of “gently used”, quality items (but NO CLOTHING, please.)

and ...

Diane Edward is coordinating our Fall Fest RAFFLE again this year, & we’re eager to accept items to include!  Jill Lukas is donating another of her sensational, one-of-a-kind, made- just-for-Fall Fest QUILTS to the cause, but gift baskets or items to be included in gift baskets; gift cards from area merchants or restaurants; gift certificates for massages, or tanning salons, or just about any other place you can think of will gladly be accepted!  If YOU can help out with this important endeavor, please let Diane know!

COME ONE- COME ALL TO OUR  1st ANNUAL BREWERS OUTING After years of working at Miller Park Concessions….it’s time that we actually go to see a game! Come join us on Saturday, September 10th for a day of fun as we watch the Brewers take on the Philadelphia Phillies.  We will meet at church (time yet to be determined) so that we can carpool to the stadium.  There we will have a tailgate party complete with hamburgers, hotdogs, brats and all the “fixins”.  Game time is 6:10 PM.  Everyone is welcome- you don’t want to miss this fun filled event!  Cost is just $23.00 per person, which includes your ticket, tailgate party and parking. We have to have our tickets purchased about 30 days in advance to help us get seats all together, so please let Jill Lukas know prior to Sunday, August 4th if you plan to attend. More details will be provided in the weeks to come but if you have questions... see Jill on A Sunday morning!

There’s a BENEFIT for INTERFAITH WEST CENTRAL at Noodles & Company, 76th St. just south of Layton Avenue, on Thurs., July 14, from 5:00 - 9:00 PM. 25% of all sales, whether “Dine In” or “To Go”, will assist Interfaith West Central, which prides itself on “Linking Older Adults with a Caring Community”..  It’s one of the organizations our Peace &  Justice Committee supports; our Barb Brunett is a member of their Board.

There are still dates when we need trained “staff” to sign up to work Brewer’s games at Miller Park.  We need as many folks as possible; the more workers we have, the larger booth we’ll be assigned.  That means:  a) we’ll raise more money for the church, and,  b) the smaller the chance that our “date” will be canceled.  You’ll find the sign-up sheet on the table at the rear of the sanctuary.

from Becky Huck:  HEY, CHURCH FAMILY!

Our church services are now on TV! They can be viewed on Channel 96 if you have Time Warner Cable (and live in the Milwaukee/Northshore area), or Channel 99 if you have AT&T as your cable provider (if you live in the Milwaukee/Northshore, or the surrounding areas). The times for each show will be posted in our newsletters every month, they are usually aired about a month after the actual church service (each show will be titled based on the sermon that is included in that service). We are limited to 58 minutes, so we sometimes have to edit certain parts of the service.

In closing, thanks to Pastor Kevin, Tom Tarnowski, Mike Schmeling, Becky Huck, Alan & Terry Arenz, and Sandy Reichert for helping out with this project.  You can REALLY help this project by sitting more towards the front of the church (to show our tv viewers that our church is crowded). Also, only if you need to visit the balcony area during filming, please be very quiet while filming of church services is taking place. If you have seen our show on TV and would like to fill out a comment card, please get one from the back of the church! Thanks for your support! Here are times for the upcoming shows.

Sat., Nov. 5, from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM.  We’ll need to have LOTS of donors (35 is a nice number to aim for...)  Just think:  a single pint of blood can save 3 lives!  AWESOME!

We Love Our Custodial Volunteers ! For June, those dusting, vacuuming, mopping & cleaning were:  Ed & Bobbie Griffith, Phyllis Shudy, Hugh Evans, Peter Zoeller, Mike & Karin Schmeling, Becky Huck,  & Judy & Jim Dickson.  THANK YOU, THANK YOU! These volunteers continue to be our “Custodial Angels”, for it’s a vitally important means of keeping our expenses here at the church down!  DO, PLEASE, consider helping the church in this way!

We’ve been talking a lot about SYNOD CHOOL in our last couple of newsletters, but we’ll run some information on it one last time.  It’s held from July 24-29, at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, & the theme this year is “All My Relatives”.  It offers opportunities for life-enhancing studies that are simply   INCREDIBLE!  Please take time to check out the information on the table in the narthex, to find out about all the fascinating workshops, worships, & opportunities for fellowship that are available there.

Jan Wilke is collecting gently-used BOOKS for the West Allis Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.  The books you donate will be sold  for a small fee to folks waiting for family members to come out of surgery, & the like.  Proceeds fund scholarships which the Auxiliary provides.  Fiction, non-fiction, & travel books will be welcomed, & received with thanks.  Bring them to the Family Meditation Room, & place in the box Jan has provided for this purpose.  THANK YOU!

SAVE the date! Pastor Kevin & Sally Tarvid will host the annual ICE CREAM SOCIAL on Sun.,

Aug. 28, at their home at 7670 W. Honey Creek Parkway in West Allis.  It’s always a treat to visit with friends in the church family & enjoy build-your-own sundaes & soda.  Write it on your calendars, now, so you don’t miss it!  We’ll tell you more in the July & August issues of The Messenger.

SMILE !! RuthMary Gamache shares this delightful little story.

Following worship one Sunday morning, after the congregation had left the sanctuary, an usher picking up discarded bulletins noticed a boy about 7 years old sitting sideways in a pew, staring at the wall.  Concerned, he approached the child.  Was he okay, the usher asked?

“Oh, sure,” said the boy.  “I’m just looking at that thing.”  He nodded in the direction of a large plaque on the wall.  “What is it?”

“It’s a plaque,” replied the usher.

“What are all those names on it?” the boy queried.

‘Oh, my,” replied the usher.  “Those are the names of everyone from this congregation who has died in the service.”

The child thought a moment, processing the information.  Then he turned to the usher.

“Which one?” he asked.  “The 9:30 service, or the one at 11:00?

Because the denomination has removed standard quorum requirements from the Book of Order, it was necessary for us to set a quorum number for GAPC.  Therefore, a SPECIAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING was held at the close of worship June 26.  We voted to set the quorum for congregational meetings at 1/10 of our active membership, (which means 19 people).  Our church bylaws will be amended to reflect the change.  Quorums for meetings of the Board of Deacons or Elders remains unchanged, at 50% for each group.  The congregation also approved the Session recommendation that notice of congregational meetings be given on two successive Sundays prior to the meeting, though the meeting can be held immediately following the notice on the second Sunday.  Of course, whenever possible, congregational meetings will be announced three, four, or even more, weeks in advance
